‘Nimble, musically accomplished and extravagantly silly… a joy.’
The Times
‘With remarkably accomplished and effortlessly enjoyable comedy such as this, barbershop might just regain some of its long-lost kudos.’
Chortle
Third show from the award-winning musical comedy quartet, although with no narrative connection at all to the previous two.
God summons four dastardly horsemen to unleash total destruction: cue mistaken identity, four-part harmony and at least one hobby horse.
As heard on BBC Radio 4.
If all you do is leave Apocalypse No! with a new appreciation of the humble hand dryer, then their work to save humanity is done.
A quartet of anarchic barbershop singers, the company has been dropping into Edinburgh on an annual basis since 2008 with a selection of increasingly bizarre tales. This year Rob Castell, Tom Sadler, Pete Sorel-Cameron and formidably talented Lara Stubbs have been tasked to destroy the world in the guise of God’s personal A-Team – the four Horsemen of the Apocalypse.
Upon discovering that, actually, they may not want to give up their favourite creature comforts, the intrepid crew come up with a fiendish plan to save the world and foil God’s auditors all in sublime musical rounds and harmonies. With a healthy dose of inspiration from Terry Pratchett, Neil Gaiman and Douglas Adams, the company set out to save an unsuspecting world by fixing it’s problems at their source.
Barbershopera might just be as much fun as it’s possible to have in a Fringe venue with four black capes and a pair of red recorders.
‘There’s whooping and cheering – lots of it… extremely fun… superb… extraordinary a cappella effect… sharp humour… some of the funniest and most… inventive rhymes in Edinburgh; wonderful visual gags.’
Reel to Real, Hamlet! The Musical, and Barbershopera have all been nominated in the Musical Theatre Matters awards, with Barbershopera getting three nods and the other shows one each. Read the full story here.
