CBBC’s Dan and Jeff present their most extravagant show yet, now in amazing 3D! The creators of Potted Potter and Potted Pirates cram all the classic pantomimes into just 70 minutes. Why wait until Christmas and see one pantomime, when you could see seven come along at once this August?
With only a glass slipper and some magic beans, the dastardly double act dash from Aladdin to Dick Whittington while trying to work out how two of them can play all seven dwarves.
The best show on the Fringe. Oh no it isn’t! Oh yes it is! It’s unmissable fun whether you’re six or 106.
‘This reminded me of how much I both loathe and love panto. Dan and Jeff cram seven of the best-known and most loved pantos into a delightfully hectic seventy minutes, and make the whole experience a pleasure. Their comedy is at just the right level for it to appeal to the kids (who approved painfully loudly), while at the same time not leave the adults behind. You are led by the hand into their imaginative short course in the pantomime, get thrown sweets, water-gunned, and literally up out of your chairs in an imaginary ’3d’ pumpkin-come-carriage on the way to the ball. A charmingly daft joy for the whole family.’
For a glorious dose of silliness, you can always rely on CBBC’s Dan and Jeff. They’ve perfected the Eric-Ernie dynamic of the infuriated straight man and the clown who deliberately messes it all up, and panto lends itself beautifully to audience participation. Take your children to the loo beforehand; there’s a very real danger of them wetting themselves with laughter, although with all the water pistols going off, they might just get away with it.
‘You want a stone-cold recommendation for a five star show that has two pitch perfect performers, that can have kids screaming for more and the adults demanding an encore? No problem… Dan and Jeff’s Potted Panto (Pleasance Courtyard). In theory it’s two storytellers going over their favourite pantos (yes, in August), but with an ear for comic timing, a story that works on multiple levels for every age in the audience, knockabout slapstick mixed with nods to Casablanca and Das Boot, this double act is the secret gig of the Fringe that everyone hopes they find so they can say “they were there”.’
Potted Panto opened in Edinburgh this week but the show nearly didn’t go on as whilst on the train to Edinburgh Jefferson Turner, who co-writes and performs the show, spilt an entire mug of East Coast Trains coffee over the show laptop. The laptop, which was ruined, contained the up-to-date script for Potted Panto. The show is performed by double act Dan and Jeff and features performances of six pantomimes and A Christmas Carol in one hour! By working through the night, the team behind the show were able to piece back together the script and queues in time for their technical rehearsal at 8 am the next morning. It just goes to show, true dedication to cross-dressing, fairy Godmothers and ugly sisters knows no bounds. Director, Richard Hurst commented “in the show it’s Dan who’s the idiot, but this time Jeff’s dedication to slapstick went above and beyond the call of duty”. The cast and crew generously clubbed together and bought Jeff another cup of coffee.
Potted Panto will be holding Edinburgh previews in London this month, giving audiences the opportunity to have the first glimpse of this brand new show.
